Diversity Committee
From the Radiology Department Newsletter, Editor: Mary McAllister

Johns Hopkins Radiology's Diversity Committee, in 2008, decided to expand its mission beyond educating faculty on ethnic diversity to becoming actively involved in social service as well. The committee’s next project was to collect school supplies for needy students in our area, as well as for spouses of Hopkins staff members who were teachers in schools that could use assistance.

Diversity Committee member Elnor Brown's office looked liked Office Depot as the supplies poured in—from hand-held calculators, dictionaries, and backpacks to notebooks, pens and pencils. One school in particular— The Wolfe Street Academy— was very grateful to Hopkins Radiology as they have many students who have difficulties in obtaining needed school supplies.

The social service endeavors are a consequence of the department's successful fundraising effort for earthquake survivors in China. Thousands of dollars were collected through the generous support of staff and faculty at Johns Hopkins Medicine at a festival celebrating Chinese culture. The event took place under the guidance of Dr. David Yousem and Elnor Brown.

The Houck Lobby was decorated with items donated by our faculty and included traditional lanterns, good luck cords, paintings, and Chinese paper cuttings. The 2008 Olympian mascots were also on display. Visitors to the event enjoyed food, tea, Tai Chi and music. The highlight was a very emotional poem about the recent earthquake, written by a Hopkins Radiology faculty member.

We are looking forward to our next festival and hope you'll join us for the celebration!
