Residency

The philosophy of resident education at the Russell H. Morgan Department of Radiology at Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions is to provide superb clinical training in each area of diagnostic imaging. In addition to providing superb academic mentorship by renowned physicians and individualized career guidance, we prepare academic radiologists to become future leaders in our discipline by fostering leadership skills.

Our five-year radiology residencies are flexible and comprehensive with focused training in the candidate's area of interest. Residents may opt to spend up to 10 months of their fourth year in a single subspecialty area. The fifth year of the program may be spent as a full year of fellowship in the same discipline. This creates, if desired, an opportunity for five years of training including the equivalent of a two-year fellowship experience, which may be uniquely designed to accommodate special interests or ongoing research.

Residents may also opt for a full year of research. This year may be structured in several ways— most commonly, as one of the four years of residency training to be followed by a one-year fellowship, or as a year interposed between four years of residency and a fellowship year.

The Chairman, Program Directors, and the senior faculty will meet periodically with each resident to assist in planning and mentoring the residents' careers. We are committed to providing individualized career development guidance for our residents with the flexibility required to satisfy the needs and to encourage the professional growth of our trainees, and are prepared to support those who choose to create individualized programs that incorporate special interests not addressed by existing pathways. We will also allow and facilitate a fifth year of training for residents whose career needs would be better served by fellowship programs at other institutions.
